What it does

HandBrake converts common media sources into MP4, MKV, or WebM using modern video and audio encoders. It includes device presets, subtitle handling, filters, and a batch queue.

Start with a device or general preset, then choose constant quality or an average bitrate according to the delivery requirement. Select the wanted audio and subtitle tracks before queueing several titles. HandBrake handles unprotected DVD and Blu-ray sources, but the official feature page excludes copy-protected discs. Its purpose is encoding to supported outputs, so the choice of container and codec should follow the playback destination.

The desktop workflow writes a new Destination file: set its Save As name and To folder before starting the encode. This keeps output naming explicit when queueing similar sources. Previewing a preset and quality setting is useful before a long encode, because device compatibility depends on both the chosen container and encoding settings.

Strengths

  • Combines presets with detailed encoding, filtering, and track choices.

Watch out for

  • Disc inputs must be free of copy protection.

Best for

  • Preparing a consistent video library for supported playback devices
