What it does
Harvard Art Museums makes website images available for personal noncommercial use and offers requests for restricted or larger files. Its licensing guidance describes project-specific permissions and reproduction rules.
An image that is unavailable online, or needed at a larger size, follows its image-request route. Include the object link, intended publication and required reproduction when making the request.
The licensing guidance addresses the finished layout: full-image reproductions, text overlays and details have specific conditions. A detail must be identified as such and accompanied by a full view. Permission applies to the agreed project and does not automatically cover a later edition or another publication. Artist copyright and other rights outside the Museums’ control can require separate permission.
Strengths
- Requests can cover images unavailable online or needed at a larger size.
- Reproduction guidance addresses details and full-image views.
Watch out for
- A project licence does not automatically cover later editions or other publications.
Best for
- Editors preparing artwork reproductions for a defined project
