What it does
Haystack is a Python framework for building retrieval-augmented generation applications, search systems, and tool-using agents. Developers connect reusable components for document stores, retrieval, prompt building, model generation, and other pipeline steps, then run the composition as an application. Its integration model supports several model and storage providers, so a team can change components without rewriting the entire workflow. The framework is useful when an AI feature needs an inspectable pipeline rather than a single opaque model call.
Assemble a small retrieval pipeline
Install the package with pip install haystack-ai, then begin with a few documents in an in-memory document store. The current quick start builds a retriever, prompt builder, and generator, connects them in a Pipeline, and runs a question against the stored content. That is a practical first task for a small FAQ or a handful of internal notes: inspect what was retrieved before deciding whether the generated answer is useful.
The library provides the orchestration; it does not supply every external model or dependency. The documentation shows model-provider options and requires provider credentials for hosted generation. Optional integrations are separate packages, so install only the components the application actually uses. A local model provider can be used instead of a hosted API, but it must still be configured as a generator.
The open-source Python framework is distinct from deepset's hosted Haystack Enterprise Platform, which offers managed pipeline operations and additional collaboration features. This record covers the framework and its Apache 2.0 license, not enterprise plan pricing.
Strengths
- Makes retrieval and generation steps explicit as connected components in a runnable pipeline.
- Supports integrations with multiple model providers and document-store implementations.
- The quick start can begin with an in-memory store and a small set of documents.
Watch out for
- Hosted model generation may require provider credentials and can add the provider's own usage terms.
- Some integrations have optional dependencies that must be installed separately.
Best for
- Prototyping a retrieval-augmented question-answering pipeline in Python.
- Developers who want inspectable components for search or tool-calling agents.
