What it does

Hello bank! is BNP Paribas Fortis’ mobile banking brand in Belgium. Its account app includes Wero payments using a QR code or linked phone number. The payment account has no monthly management fee and includes a debit card for each holder.

Pay a contact without asking for an IBAN

To receive Wero payments through a phone number, link that number to the payment account in the Hello bank! app. To send money, add mobile contacts to the app and select the recipient’s number. Scanning or generating a QR code provides another payment route. Wero is included without an extra charge.

What the free account includes

Account opening and management cost €0. The account includes a contactless debit card per holder and access to the app and online services. Extra charges apply to services such as foreign-currency transactions, replacement cards and transfers attempted without sufficient funds.

Easy Save is an optional setting in Hello bank! web. It rounds card purchases and transfers up to the next euro and moves the difference into savings. For example, a €12.30 purchase would set aside €0.70.

Opening and initial restrictions

Applicants must be private individuals aged at least 18 with their main residence in Belgium and an accepted Belgian identity card. The offer excludes US citizens. Each customer can hold at most one individual and one joint payment account.

An account opened remotely initially restricts cash deposits, transfers outside SEPA, card-limit changes and itsme access to Easy Banking Web. The Hello Team can arrange an in-person identity check at a BNP Paribas Fortis branch to remove these restrictions.

Strengths

  • Wero supports contact-number and QR-code payments
  • Account management and the holder’s debit card have no monthly fee
  • Easy Save can turn card purchases and transfers into small savings deposits

Watch out for

  • Opening requires Belgian residence and an accepted Belgian identity card
  • Remote onboarding initially restricts several account functions
  • Removing those restrictions requires an in-person identity check

Best for

  • Eligible Belgian adults managing everyday payments on a phone
  • Households using Wero contact payments and automatic saving roundups
