What it does
Heritage Images licenses historical photographs and fine-art images from museums, galleries and private collections. Its search distinguishes an image’s creator from the person depicted and the artist behind an earlier original.
An engraving can involve several names. Use Creator for its maker, Subject for the person shown and After for the artist whose work it reproduces. Advanced Search also provides AND, OR and NOT term groups, a geographic map and a category tree.
Registration is required to price, buy and download high-resolution images. Choose the intended use from the pricing menus to calculate a fee in GBP; contact the agency when the available options do not describe the project. Lightboxes can hold notes and be emailed to colleagues, while My Account keeps orders and invoices.
The licence covers the use, territory and period stated on the invoice, with payment required before publication. Digital files normally must be deleted twelve weeks after the invoice unless another date is specified. The catalogue also includes labelled AI-generated images, so distinguish those from historical photographs when documentary accuracy matters.
Strengths
- Search fields separate the maker, depicted person and original artist.
- Shared lightboxes support notes and picture selection with colleagues.
Watch out for
- The standard terms limit file retention to twelve weeks unless otherwise agreed.
- Some catalogue images are labelled AI-generated illustrations.
Best for
- Picture editors identifying and licensing historical or fine-art images
