What it does

Hola offers limited free access and Premium plans through apps and browser extensions, with routing and peer-sharing behavior that differs by product form.

Hola's FAQ makes product form an important choice. Some free software exchanges idle device resources for network access; Premium users do not contribute as peers. The FAQ lists exceptions for its browser extensions, iOS app and Google Play Android app, so peer participation should be checked against the exact download being installed.

Traffic coverage also differs. Hola describes proxy split tunneling for extensions and Android apps and says not all traffic receives added encryption; the FAQ also permits automatic HTTP fallback in the extension, browser and Android app when that helps access. Read that scope before using it for a task that needs a device-wide tunnel. The free offer is time-limited.

Hola's privacy policy also matters when choosing a product form. It permits collection of IP and account information and says log data may include access times and dates. For the browser extension, that log category can include browsing history; on mobile it may include the names of apps you select for unblocking. Peer-resource contribution and data collection are separate questions, so avoiding the peer network does not by itself remove these policy provisions.

Strengths

  • Paid option without peer resource contribution
  • Documented differences among app and extension forms

Watch out for

  • Some free forms contribute device resources to the peer network
  • Some forms use proxy split tunneling with partial traffic coverage
  • The extension, browser and Android app permit automatic HTTP fallback

Best for

  • Users who will evaluate the exact access and sharing model
