What it does

Holygrain provides film-grain overlays scanned from 35mm, 16mm and 8mm stock, plus dust and scratch plates. A free 35mm download accompanies paid packs in several resolutions and codecs.

Choose the film stock, resolution and file format before checkout. The Ultimate Bundle offers ProRes or H.264 files at 23.976 fps. Its 8K option includes 35mm grain at 8K, while the 16mm and 8mm grain packs remain 4K. The free 35mm plate includes dust and scratches and asks for a name and email address.

Place a grain plate above the footage, set the composite mode to Overlay and adjust opacity. The 25-second grain plates can be looped: adjust the first, then duplicate it across the sequence. Separate dirt plates can be rotated, mirrored and cut while a clean grain layer stays underneath.

After payment, a personal download page and email links provide the files. Download links last seven days; later access may incur a processing fee. The licence permits the plates within a substantially developed production, including commercial work, but prohibits standalone redistribution.

Strengths

  • Clean grain and separate dirt plates allow independent texture adjustments.
  • Tutorials show the Overlay-and-opacity workflow for several editors.

Watch out for

  • Download links expire after seven days.
  • The 8K bundle does not make every included film-grain pack 8K.

Best for

  • Editors and colourists adding scanned film texture
