What it does
HumHub is a social community and intranet platform organised around spaces. Each space has its own members, visibility, join policy and permissions, while editions and deployment choices range from a free Community Edition to paid professional and hosted options.
A HumHub space has separate rules for joining and viewing content. Membership can be invitation-only, open to requests or available to all registered members. Visibility can include guests, all registered users or only space members. For an alumni network, public announcements could sit beside private spaces for regional organisers.
Use Add Space in the space navigation, give it a name, then set its join policy and visibility. Membership requests appear under Space Settings, Members, Pending Approvals. The Members area also lets space administrators assign groups, with permissions for posting, commenting, inviting and managing content. Guest access works only when the site's wider settings allow unauthenticated visitors.
Software, hosting and setup costs
Community Edition is free. Professional Edition is licensed by user capacity, with monthly or annual billing and a separate hosting charge if HumHub operates the service for you. The pricing calculator currently shows EUR 144 per month for up to 100 users with managed hosting and no onboarding; the hosting component is EUR 36 per month. Annual billing reduces the licence and optional hosting total by 10%. Networks above the calculator's standard range need a tailored quote.
Optional Starter onboarding costs EUR 1,575 once, while Professional onboarding is EUR 2,575 once. You can instead use the self-guided option at no onboarding charge. The calculator collects your configuration and contact details for a non-binding offer. The open-source application uses AGPLv3-only, alongside a proprietary licensing option; running it yourself also means arranging its server and maintenance.
Strengths

- Permissions are assignable to space-specific roles
Watch out for
- Guest-visible spaces require the site's unauthenticated-access setting
- Managed hosting and optional onboarding add to Professional licence costs
Best for
- Organisations running member communities with several access-controlled groups
