What it does

IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers provide single-tenant physical compute in IBM Cloud. The VPC offering uses preset server profiles across multiple regions, while Classic infrastructure offers extensive customization for CPU, memory, storage and network choices. IBM lists Intel and AMD processors, GPU options, and SAP and VMware solutions. Hourly, monthly and reserved billing options let teams choose between on-demand capacity and a longer commitment.

Choose the infrastructure model first

IBM presents two paths. VPC uses predefined bare-metal profiles on a software-defined network and is positioned for high availability and elasticity; IBM says these profiles can be deployed in multiple regions in 10 minutes or less. Classic supports extensive custom configurations and is positioned for steady-state, predictable operations. The product page lists Intel and AMD options, GPUs, and SAP or VMware solutions.

Build a cost view around the whole server

The pricing page describes on-demand VPC servers with pay-as-you-use hourly and monthly billing, as well as reserved capacity. The hourly total can include provisioned server time, the selected operating system and network bandwidth; overall charges can also include bandwidth per gigabyte, software, internet transfer and optional VPC services. Billing accrues from provisioning until cancellation. Use the regional quote or provisioning flow for the exact configuration rather than treating the CPU profile as the full bill.

Bare metal is a fit when dedicated physical capacity or a particular hardware configuration matters more than an abstracted, automatically scaled runtime. It is also a different product from IBM's virtual-server offering: these instances are single-tenant physical servers.

Strengths

  • The product provides dedicated, single-tenant physical servers rather than virtual instances.
  • Customers can choose preset VPC profiles or highly customized Classic configurations, with Intel, AMD and GPU options.
  • IBM offers hourly, monthly and reserved billing choices, including on-demand pay-as-you-use options.

Watch out for

  • The total cost is composed of several region- and configuration-dependent charges, including server time, operating system, bandwidth, transfers and optional services.
  • The product requires selecting and managing a physical server configuration; it is not a serverless or request-driven hosting model.

Best for

  • Workloads that need single-tenant physical compute or specific CPU and GPU configurations
  • SAP or VMware environments being deployed on IBM Cloud bare metal
  • Steady-state enterprise systems that benefit from Classic customization or reserved capacity
