What it does

Manchester Images is the city library’s Local Image Collection, documenting Manchester’s people, streets and buildings over more than a century. Related photographic holdings are also searchable through the Council’s archives catalogue.

In the archives catalogue, select Only items with images to narrow a search to illustrated records. For the Documentary Photography Archive, enter DPA in Reference no. and a person or street name in Any text.

The Council’s digital-copy form accepts up to three images for personal use at GBP 10 per image, including VAT. Publication and other reproduction uses need a separate application. Published reproduction rates include GBP 120 per image for books, exhibitions, advertising or websites, plus VAT; high-resolution email supply adds GBP 10 per image. Permission covers the agreed occasion, so a new edition or project needs another application.

Some photographs have unresolved copyright ownership. The Council’s permission does not replace any consent needed from another identified rights holder.

Strengths

  • The catalogue can restrict results to records with images.
  • The DPA reference field helps isolate a particular regional photographic archive.
  • Image supply and reproduction fees are separately stated.

Watch out for

  • Reproduction permission covers the specified project or occasion.
  • Copyright ownership is uncertain for some photographs.

Best for

  • Local-history publishers and community researchers working on Manchester
