What it does
Insomnia is a desktop API client and collaboration workspace, not a provider of API endpoints. Its API Collections can hold requests, environments and an OpenAPI specification, allowing a developer to design an interface and exercise its operations in one place. The client supports HTTP and other request protocols, scripting, collection runs, mock servers and a command-line route for CI workflows.
Keep the first workspace local
A developer can download Insomnia for macOS, Windows or Linux and begin in the local-only Scratch Pad without logging in. For a first contract check, create an API Collection, import an OpenAPI file or URL, and generate a request for one documented endpoint. The collection can keep its spec, requests and environment values together; a response can then be checked interactively or as part of a collection run. These are documented capabilities, not a request sent to a live service.
Insomnia is the client in this workflow: you provide the API definition, base URL and any credentials. It does not supply the external service itself. Local storage avoids sending collection data to cloud sync by default; teams can choose Git or cloud storage when collaboration is needed. The free Essentials tier lists unlimited local or cloud projects and collection runs, plus Git Sync for up to three users.
For automation, the current documentation recommends pre-request and after-response scripts for new tests. A separate Inso CLI guide explains running legacy unit tests from a terminal or CI and says the old Tests tab is hidden by default in current versions. That version-specific distinction is worth checking before copying an older tutorial. Paid tiers add broader team and governance controls, while the free tier limits mock-server requests.
Strengths
- The client can keep OpenAPI specs, generated requests, environments and tests in one API Collection.
- A local-only Scratch Pad is available without login, while Git and cloud sync are optional storage choices.
- The Collection Runner and Inso CLI support repeatable request and test workflows beyond one-off manual calls.
Watch out for
- The free Essentials plan limits Git Sync collaboration to three users and mock-server traffic to 1,000 requests per month.
- Legacy unit tests are hidden by default in current versions; the documentation recommends scripts for new testing work.
Best for
- Developers who need to inspect, debug and test APIs while iterating on an OpenAPI specification.
- Small teams storing API collections locally or in Git and running repeatable checks from CI.
