What it does

InvoicePlane is free, self-hosted invoicing software under the MIT licence. Small businesses can manage clients and quotes, create PDF invoices, record payments and adjust their templates. You supply the hosting and maintain the installation; help comes from the community rather than a paid support service.

InvoicePlane keeps client details, quotes, invoices and payments in a web application on your own server. It suits a small business that has someone to maintain its hosting and wants control over invoice templates, amount formats and customer fields.

The software uses the MIT licence, so there is no software subscription. Hosting and any connected payment-provider charges remain separate. Download the release, create a database, upload the files and configure the installation address. The browser installer creates your local login; there is no hosted InvoicePlane account to subscribe to.

After installation, set the currency and number formatting in Settings. Add a customer through Clients > Add Client. Then choose Invoices > Create Invoice, select that client, set the date and invoice group, and add saved products or individual rows. Use Options > Send Email to send the PDF after reviewing the email details.

Payments > Enter Payment records money received outside the application. Online payment providers need their own setup; once connected, successful online payments can be recorded automatically. The homepage names PayPal and Stripe as options.

PDF and email templates can be customized. For release 1.7.2 onward, custom invoice and quote template names must be added to an allowlist in the configuration file, so follow the upgrade guide before bringing older templates across.

The project offers community forums and chat, but no 24-hour support, service-level agreement or paid help. Its developers also make clear that businesses must check whether the invoice output meets their own requirements, even though electronic invoice generation is available.
