What it does
Ionic is an open-source UI toolkit for mobile-style applications built with web technologies. It provides controls, gestures, animations and theming through Web Components and framework integrations.
Ionic provides mobile interface controls, gestures and adaptive styling through Web Components, with integrations for Angular, React and Vue. The framework can also run without those frameworks.
For the React starter, install the Ionic CLI, run ionic start myApp blank --type react, enter the new folder and run ionic serve. The generated app opens in the browser. Pages sit inside IonRouterOutlet, and each page needs IonPage as its root for layout and transitions. Adding a route and an IonButton with routerLink connects a new screen; IonBackButton handles return navigation.
Native delivery uses Capacitor or Cordova. The React quickstart shows building the web assets, adding iOS or Android and opening the resulting native projects in their IDEs.
Ionic Framework is free under MIT for personal and commercial projects, with no account needed for local development. Ionic stopped new sales of its separate commercial products in 2025, while committing to continued maintenance of the open-source Framework and Capacitor.
Strengths
- Controls, gestures and adaptive styling are documented together.
- Standalone Web Components and framework integrations provide several adoption routes.
- The React guide connects project setup, page navigation and native project generation.
Watch out for
- Native packaging involves additional tools beyond the UI toolkit.
Best for
- Teams prototyping mobile application flows with web skills
