What it does

IPinfo Lite API returns country and continent geolocation alongside basic autonomous-system information for an IP address. A request identifies either the target address or the caller's address and includes an account token; the response contains fields such as country code, continent, ASN, organization name, and domain. Lite is also available as a downloadable data set, but its lookup API is useful when an application needs a compact IP context without city-level or privacy-detection attributes.

Make a focused lookup

The API reference documents a request shaped like /lite/{ip}?token=... for a target address and /lite/me?token=... for the caller's address. A successful response includes the address, ASN and organization fields, country and continent names, and their codes. The bulk endpoint can enrich up to 1,000 IPs in a call. The response is deliberately limited: Lite does not include city-level location, detailed privacy signals, or the richer carrier and place data in IPinfo's paid tiers.

Use it when a service needs broad country context for localization, coarse fraud triage, or network attribution, and avoid treating IP geolocation as a precise physical location. The product page says Lite is refreshed daily and covers both IPv4 and IPv6. API calls use a token, and the product's onboarding directs new users to sign up to obtain access.

Data reuse has an attribution condition

IPinfo says Lite data is released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. Its product page permits commercial and non-commercial use with attribution, and the CC license deed explains the attribution and ShareAlike conditions for adapted material. That is a license for the IP data, not an open-source software license for the API implementation. The API plan itself is listed at no monthly charge with unlimited requests; the separate paid tiers add more detailed attributes.

Strengths

  • The free Lite API has no daily or monthly request limit and provides both IPv4 and IPv6 coverage.
  • A batch endpoint can return country and ASN context for up to 1,000 addresses in one request.
  • The official product page documents commercial and non-commercial use of Lite data subject to attribution.

Watch out for

  • The response is limited to country-level geolocation and basic ASN data rather than city-level or advanced privacy attributes.
  • Reuse of the licensed data requires attribution, and adaptations are subject to the ShareAlike license condition.

Best for

  • Adding country and ASN context to login, traffic, or security events without building an IP-data lookup pipeline.
  • Batch-enriching IP addresses when country-level context is sufficient.
