What it does
IrfanView is a Windows image viewer with batch conversion, cropping, watermarking and metadata-related tools.
For batch conversion, choose the output folder and naming rule before saving. The $D directory placeholder writes back to each source folder and can overwrite inputs; combine conversion with a new filename when preserving originals. For the documented lossless JPEG transformations, select the pictures in Thumbnails and use JPG Lossless Operations. Automatic rotation relies on the EXIF orientation tag. The free licence covers private, educational and charitable use; commercial or workplace use requires a purchased perpetual licence.
Strengths
- Viewing and batch image processing
- Lossless JPEG operations are documented
Watch out for
- Freeware terms cover non-commercial use
- Using the source-folder placeholder can overwrite inputs unless the naming rule avoids collisions.
Best for
- Reviewing and preparing image folders on Windows
