What it does

RailClone assembles geometry from reusable segments and rules inside 3ds Max. Its visual Style Editor can build structures along splines or across areas, with controls for spacing, corners and surface placement. A free Lite edition and a perpetual Pro edition serve different levels of procedural modelling.

A RailClone style starts with small source meshes and rules for how to arrange them. Splines guide the layout, while segments provide the geometry. Offset changes spacing, rotation or position; Divide breaks splines into even intervals or uses markers; Catenary adds a controllable hanging shape for cables.

Other operators change where a structure fits. Spline Boolean can combine, subtract or intersect shapes. Conform projects a spline onto a surface, and primitives such as lines, circles and rectangles can be created inside the Style Editor. Pro also includes RailClone Tools for turning generated geometry into native instances when another renderer or handoff needs them.

Lite can be used for personal and commercial work. Pro costs US$289 as a single payment, excluding VAT, and includes one year of maintenance, the full preset library and unrestricted generator/segment counts. The installed perpetual version keeps working after maintenance ends.

The current requirements cover 3ds Max 2023 to 2027 on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Assets made from your own models and textures may be sold. Built-in library models and sample scenes carry a separate restriction: models based wholly or partly on that supplied geometry, texture or material content cannot be redistributed or resold.

Strengths

  • Style Editor primitives can create guide shapes without separate scene splines.
  • Standalone and network licences are offered at the same price.

Watch out for

  • It requires 3ds Max on Windows.
  • Supplied library content cannot be repackaged into assets for redistribution or resale.

Best for

  • Architectural artists building repeated geometry with editable rules
  • 3ds Max users making reusable procedural asset systems
