What it does

Iwaria is a community photo library focused on Africa. It offers free photographs under CC0, with keyword search, contributor pages, collections and image metadata.

Open View photo info to inspect the location, photographer, tags and available dimensions. Tyck’s night-traffic photograph, for example, is identified as Cotonou, Benin, and offers Small, Medium, Large and Original Size choices up to 6000 × 3376 pixels. This makes it easier to select an image for a specific place and output size.

The terms require submitted photos to have been taken in Africa and ask contributors to own the necessary rights and obtain consent from people shown. Iwaria publishes the photographs under CC0, without required attribution, but does not guarantee every contributor’s rights or the accuracy of the material.

Strengths

  • Image records can include a location, contributor and camera information.
  • Several download sizes are shown before choosing a file.

Watch out for

  • The service does not warrant the rights in every contributor submission.

Best for

  • Designers and editors seeking African subjects and settings
