What it does

GeoGen builds landscapes and planets from node graphs, imported resources and simulation effects. Spline controls guide features such as roads and rivers, while erosion and weathering alter the terrain. It exports both geometry and maps for use in other 3D applications. The paid Indie Beta offer includes permanent use and 12 months of updates.

GeoGen's terrain graph combines source nodes, modifiers, filters and masks. External textures or meshes can help shape the landscape. Subgraphs group related nodes, and spline-based masks or heightmaps give more direct control over routes through a procedural terrain.

The output differs for terrain and planets. Terrain exports include meshes, heightmaps, colour maps, texture masks and water planes. Planet delivery includes a planet mesh plus maps in octahedral or equirectangular layouts, two ways to arrange a spherical surface in a flat image. Grid and particle simulations cover effects such as crumbling rock, dunes and erosion.

GeoGen remains labelled Beta. Its detailed written documentation is still in progress, with tutorial videos, community forums and support offered in the meantime. The 30-day trial starts on first export, requires no credit card and includes the full export tools for evaluation.

The Indie Beta permanent licence includes 12 months of updates; later annual maintenance is optional, before tax. Maintenance renewal is enabled by default and can be disabled during checkout. Indie eligibility is affected by affiliate finances and the revenue of commercial clients as well as the buyer's own finances.

Strengths

  • Imported textures and meshes can shape procedural terrain.
  • Planet maps can use either octahedral or equirectangular layouts.

Watch out for

  • The product is still in beta.
  • Detailed written documentation is not yet available.

Best for

  • Environment artists building terrain for other 3D applications
  • Artists creating procedural planet surfaces
