What it does

Jaspersoft provides report-design tools, a Java reporting library and commercial reporting-server capabilities. The family covers highly formatted documents, embedded analytics and self-service reporting.

Jaspersoft is useful for reports whose printed or exported layout matters, such as statements and operational summaries. Free Community access includes Jaspersoft Studio and JasperReports Library. Community Server is no longer offered.

Preview a sample report

In Studio, select File > New > Jasper Report, choose the Coffee template and enter the destination and report name. Select Sample DB as the data source and use SELECT * FROM ORDERS. Choose the order and shipping fields to include, leave grouping unset for a simple list, then finish the wizard. The Preview tab compiles the definition, queries the data and fills the report. Subreports need to be built and saved separately before their parent report is previewed.

Package Access and processing scope
Community Free Studio designer and JasperReports Library
Reporting Platform Paid term licence; basic report microservices allow 10 simultaneous reports
Enterprise Platform Paid term licence; report microservices scale without that concurrency cap

Studio activation requires a Community account and acceptance of the licence terms. Its current Community designer is distributed as a binary under a BSD-type licence, without the designer source code. Commercial server APIs support report execution, exports, scheduling and repository administration.

Strengths

  • Provides free report-design and library entry points.
  • Supports precise formatted output and embedded reporting workflows.

Watch out for

  • Commercial packages have different server and concurrent-processing scope.

Best for

  • Development teams delivering parameterized, highly formatted business reports
