What it does
KeePassXC is an open-source desktop password manager that stores credentials, notes and attachments in an encrypted database file.
KeePassXC stores credentials in a KDBX database on Windows, macOS or Linux. Keep that file locally or put it in a folder managed by a storage service; KeePassXC itself is not a hosted vault service. Other compatible clients can use the same database format.
Unlocking uses the database’s master key, which can include a password, key file or supported hardware key. The official FAQ warns that changing or losing a configured key file blocks access. It recommends backing up that file and distributing it separately from a cloud-synchronized database. A synchronized KDBX file alone does not preserve every required unlock input.
