What it does
The Kunsthistorisches Museum’s online collection covers paintings, antiquities, coins, instruments, armour and other objects. Its Rights & Reproduction department handles requests for photographic material and permission to reproduce it.
Object-type browsing and themed albums are useful for a subject that crosses departments, such as courtly dress or ceremonial display. A request can concern an object’s particular photographic view as well as the object itself.
The reproduction department bases fees on the medium, type, extent and duration of use. Published permission conditions also cover alterations to the image. Include the object reference and intended reproduction when contacting the department so it can identify the file and use being requested.
Strengths
- The collection includes instruments, armour and antiquities alongside paintings.
- A dedicated department coordinates image supply and reproduction permission.
Watch out for
- Reproduction or alteration requires express permission under the published terms.
