What it does
Kiali is a browser-based console for inspecting an Istio service mesh. It presents service topology and health, exposes workload details and configuration, and can connect metrics and distributed-tracing views to the mesh. Its validation and configuration tools help operators find mesh-specific problems, while its topology gives application teams a map of service relationships. Kiali is a specialized companion to Istio rather than a general-purpose monitor for arbitrary applications or hosts.
Start with an existing mesh
Kiali expects Istio to be installed first. For an evaluation, its quick start describes running the Kiali binary locally with a Kubernetes kubeconfig; kiali run starts the backend and opens the browser interface. For a persistent production installation, the official guide recommends using the Kiali Operator, through Helm or OperatorHub, rather than treating the quick-start deployment as production setup.
Once connected, use the topology and health views to see service relationships and identify a workload that needs attention. Open its details to inspect configuration, logs, or metrics. Kiali can also connect tracing views through Jaeger or Tempo. Prometheus is needed for the full metrics experience, although the local quick start can disable Prometheus when exploring non-metrics features.
For example, after a route change, an operator can use the mesh map and validation results to locate a service whose traffic is not reaching the expected workload. This is a documented-use scenario, not a test result.
The scope is deliberately narrow: Kiali depends on an Istio mesh and does not replace the underlying service mesh, telemetry storage, or tracing backend.
Strengths
- Shows Istio service relationships and health in a mesh-specific topology view.
- Combines mesh configuration validation with workload details and linked metrics or tracing views.
- Offers a local evaluation workflow as well as operator-managed production installation options.
Watch out for
- Istio must already be installed before Kiali can inspect the mesh.
- Full metrics functionality needs a telemetry store such as Prometheus; Kiali is not that storage system.
Best for
- Troubleshooting traffic paths and health in an Istio service mesh.
- Platform teams that need a visual console for Istio configuration and workload relationships.
