What it does
KNIME Analytics Platform is a free desktop environment for visual data workflows. Nodes read, transform, join, analyze and visualize data, with optional scripting and reusable components. It supports business tasks such as spreadsheet automation, budget comparisons and customer-behavior analysis.
KNIME Analytics Platform is a free desktop tool for work that would otherwise involve repeated spreadsheet edits. A workflow connects small processing steps, called nodes, so the same import, cleanup and analysis can be run again. Files, applications and warehouses can supply the data; Python, R and JavaScript can extend the visual tools.
Turn a workbook into a chart
- Create an empty workflow and drop an Excel file onto the canvas. KNIME adds an Excel Reader node.
- Open the node's configuration, choose a sheet and execute it with the play button. Its output table appears in the node monitor.
- Connect a Column Filter to remove unneeded columns. For multiple sheets, use separate readers and a Concatenate node to combine their rows.
- Add Bar Chart, select the category column, choose an aggregation such as Sum and select the numeric measure. Apply the settings and execute the node to see the chart.
Useful groups of nodes can become reusable components. The node monitor also lets you inspect intermediate tables, which helps locate the step where a result changes.
The local Analytics Platform is free and distributed under GPLv3 with additional permissions for its KNIME plug-ins. Other extensions can have their own terms. The download form asks for an email address. Optional K-AI assistance requires a KNIME Hub login; the free Community Hub allowance is 20 AI interactions per month. KNIME says actual data values are shared with that assistant only after you grant permission.
Strengths
- Shows data preparation and analysis as inspectable, reusable visual workflows.
- Combines no-code analysis with optional scripting and multiple data-source connectors.
Watch out for
- K-AI requires a Hub account and has a monthly interaction allowance.
- Extensions can carry different licence terms from the core application.
Best for
- Business analysts replacing repeated spreadsheet preparation with reusable desktop analysis workflows
