What it does

Kontist combines a business-account app with tax estimates, receipt management and subaccounts for self-employed people in Germany. Its Free, Start and Plus plans differ in transfer allowances, bookkeeping tools and the number of separate accounts.

Kontist’s useful distinction is the connection between incoming business payments and tax reserves. The service estimates tax and sets money aside, helping a self-employed person see what remains available for other expenses. Those figures are planning estimates, not a substitute for a completed tax return. Kontist states that Solaris SE provides the account and banking services.

Plan Monthly fee Included account transactions
Free €0 5
Start €11 plus VAT 30
Plus €25 plus VAT 100

Incoming and outgoing transfers and direct debits count toward those allowances, with additional transactions charged at €0.25 each. A business receiving many small payments should count incoming transactions as well as bills.

A tax-reserve subaccount is included across the range. General-purpose subaccounts increase with the paid plans, reaching five on Plus. Receipts can be attached to their transactions, and the product works through a browser or the iOS and Android apps.

Applicants must be at least 18, resident and taxable in Germany, and able to verify their identity with an accepted document. Start with the account application, complete identity verification, then choose the plan around your payment volume and bookkeeping needs. Cash withdrawals and some card services carry separate charges.

Strengths

  • Tax reserves and receipts stay connected to business-account activity.
  • The free account can suit a business with very few incoming or outgoing payments.

Watch out for

  • Incoming transfers count toward the Free plan’s five-transaction monthly allowance.
  • Additional subaccounts and fuller bookkeeping functions require a paid plan.

Best for

  • Self-employed people in Germany who want to separate tax money
  • Freelancers who attach receipts to business transactions
