What it does

Kresus is a free, open-source personal finance manager that runs on your own server. It retrieves supported bank transactions through Woob, with categories, budgets, charts and alerts; manual entries and OFX imports provide other ways to build the register.

Kresus can alert on a transaction amount or account balance, giving you a reason to inspect the register when a threshold is crossed. Search narrows transactions by period, category, amount or date, and descriptions can be renamed into useful labels. Charts group activity by category and incoming or outgoing movement.

For an early record of a purchase, open the transaction list and choose Ajouter une opération, or + on mobile. On a bank-connected account, the later imported charge creates a duplicate of that manual entry. The Doublons section lets you merge the pair, but the merge cannot be undone. A suggested duplicate may also be a different purchase, so compare the entries before merging.

Hosting and account access

Kresus is distributed under GNU AGPL version 3. The application has no software subscription, but you provide and maintain its hosting. The Docker image includes Woob, which connects to supported bank websites. Mount the data folder persistently so a container replacement does not discard your records.

Kresus says standalone storage does not encrypt the stored data, including bank passwords. Access protection and disk security therefore belong to the server setup. Its Docker Compose example includes a login and password at the hosting layer; there is no central Kresus service account to register.

Bank retrieval usually runs overnight. OFX bank files and Kresus’s own JSON format can also be imported. These options are useful for history that a live bank connection no longer returns.

Strengths

  • Email alerts can use transaction amounts or account balances.
  • Detailed searches and editable labels help organize bank entries.
  • OFX imports can supplement bank-connected history.

Watch out for

  • Standalone Kresus storage is unencrypted according to its FAQ, including stored bank credentials.
  • Merging duplicate transactions cannot be undone.
  • Self-hosting requires server maintenance and a supported connection for automatic imports.

Best for

  • People comfortable administering a server for personal bank-transaction analysis
