What it does
NTTTCP is Microsoft's network-throughput benchmark, with documented sender and receiver workflows for Windows and Linux virtual machines.
Microsoft’s guide uses two same-size Azure VMs in a proximity placement group or availability set, with internal addresses to exclude load balancers. Prepare both endpoints and allow the benchmark traffic at the receiver. The short 10-second Windows example checks setup; the documented throughput run uses 300 seconds on both sides, with matching durations and the receiver address in both commands. Read the per-thread and total output with the selected stream count and VM configuration. Windows and Linux have separate implementations, and mixed-platform tests require no-sync options. NTTTCP is free, while the Azure account and VM resources in this guide have separate terms. This measures the selected endpoint path, not every destination’s bandwidth.
Strengths
- Explicit sender and receiver setup
- Official Windows and Linux guidance
Watch out for
- Requires controlled endpoints and network access between them
