What it does
Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, is a free app for organizing crypto accounts and preparing transfers with a separately purchased Ledger signer. It also compares third-party purchase and swap offers.
Ledger Wallet separates the asset dashboard from the hardware signer. The app prepares a payment; the connected device displays and approves it. Your recovery phrase remains essential if the hardware is lost or damaged.
The application is free, with no subscription or Ledger account needed for the core wallet. A signing device is a separate purchase. Network charges and fees for optional buying or swapping services remain payable. Provider choice and payment methods depend on your location.
For Bitcoin, add the account and select Receive. Compare its address with the one on the Ledger screen before sharing it. To pay someone, choose Send, enter their address and the amount, set the network fee, then check and approve the payment on the hardware. The Bitcoin account handles normal blockchain payments; it does not provide Lightning payments.
There is a useful distinction between a combined portfolio balance and a receiving network. For example, USDC held on Ethereum and Polygon can appear under one total, but the Asset and Address section separates accounts by chain. Open that breakdown before choosing an address for a deposit.
Purchases and swaps introduce another party. Keep the provider's name alongside its quoted rate and fees when comparing offers. Holding a token in Ledger Wallet also does not mean every provider can buy, swap or stake it. Those services have narrower asset lists and their own conditions.
