What it does

Leica Cyclone 3DR processes captured 3D data into meshes, models and reports. Full authoring uses a paid licence, including a published one-year Standard subscription. Its continuing Free Viewer companion imports data for viewing, measurements and limited inspection work without consuming a full licence.

The version 2025.1 Scan to Mesh guide starts with a selected point cloud. Choose a scanner preset or Custom settings, then use Evaluation mode to test a small cube of the scan. Detail level, box size, point spacing, minimum triangle size and texture-pixel size control the result. Only points outside clipped regions are meshed. Here, Evaluation mode means a sample calculation within the tool.

The separate 3D Mesh command offers noise-reduction and hole-handling choices. A very small deviation tolerance can retain noise, increase triangles and create a heavier file; its watertight option attempts closure where possible. Reduce then offers two distinct approaches: constrain deviation from the original, with optional sharp-edge settings, or target a vertex count or reduction rate without controlling deformation tolerance.

For the documented export route, select all, visible or selected objects, choose a filename and format, adjust the available options and units, then Export. Mesh outputs include STL, PLY, FBX, OBJ and GLB. STEP and IGES accept compatible CAD and other listed object types; they are not a universal mesh-to-CAD conversion. LGSx export requires Publisher or Publisher PRO.

Inspection commands can create Report Data, which the Report Editor turns into chapters. Templates control the layout, and the editor generates a PDF. One Cyclone 3DR project has one report. The Free Viewer supports measurements and existing inspections, while full authoring and industry options depend on the licensed features selected through Leica's licence manager.

Strengths

  • Sample meshing and explicit noise/detail controls help tune captured-data processing.
  • Mesh reduction can preserve a stated deviation tolerance instead of only targeting size.
  • Report Data and templates provide a documented path to PDF deliverables.

Watch out for

  • The Free Viewer does not include the full authoring toolset.
  • Reducing by vertex count or rate does not control deformation tolerance.
  • LGSx export needs a Publisher or Publisher PRO licence.

Best for

  • Survey and reality-capture teams preparing scan-derived meshes
  • Project reviewers needing measurements and PDF inspection deliverables
