What it does

Lemon Squeezy combines digital-product checkout, subscriptions and delivery with a merchant-of-record service. Sellers can organize products into variants and issue software license keys, then share a checkout link or embed checkout on a website. Live stores require approval, and transaction and payout charges depend on the sale and payment route.

A software download with two license tiers can be organized as one Lemon Squeezy product with variants. In Products, create the product, choose its payment type and add the relevant variants. Checkout can be linked from a page or embedded into a website.

For software licensing, enable Generate License Keys on the product or variant. Buyers receive a unique key in their receipt email and can find it in My Orders. Non-subscription licenses can have a duration and activation limit; subscription licenses follow the subscription lifecycle. The License API provides the connection to your software, which still needs to implement the relevant checks.

New accounts start in test mode. Select Activate your store, complete the business questionnaire and identity verification, then wait for approval before live selling. A test product does not automatically become a live product: use Copy to Live Mode when it is ready. The service is intended for permitted digital products; physical goods and services such as design or consulting are prohibited. Check the supported-country list for the seller's payout route. Slovenia is listed for bank payouts.

Lemon Squeezy describes itself as the seller to the buyer under its merchant-of-record model and says it handles payment and sales-tax administration within that arrangement.

Transaction and payout deductions

The advertised base ecommerce fee is 5% plus 50¢ per transaction, without a monthly ecommerce subscription. The fee guide applies it to the total order including tax, then lists additional charges:

Sale condition Additional transaction charge
Payment from outside the US 1.5%
PayPal payment 1.5%
Subscription payment 0.5%

These conditions can affect the same sale. Separate payout fees also apply: non-US bank payouts cost 1%; non-US PayPal payouts cost 3%, capped at $30. Compare the full combination for your customer and payout location.

Payouts are created twice a month, with a 13-day holding period and a $50 minimum balance that carries forward if unmet. A bank transfer can take another one to five days after it is sent. In Settings > Payout, Generate Invoice provides the payout document for your records. Free test access and the separate free email-marketing allowance do not remove live ecommerce transaction fees.

Strengths

  • Product variants can organize different editions or license tiers within one listing.
  • Generated license keys are delivered to buyers and supported by a License API.
  • Test products can be prepared before copying them into the approved live store.

Watch out for

  • International, PayPal and subscription surcharges can add to the base fee.
  • Payout thresholds, holding periods and transfer fees affect cash availability.
  • Physical goods and human services are outside the permitted selling scope.

Best for

  • Software sellers distributing licensed downloads
  • Digital-product businesses offering one-off purchases and subscriptions
  • Sellers evaluating merchant-of-record checkout and delivery
