What it does
Liana uses Bitcoin Miniscript policies and timelocks for alternative spending and recovery paths. Its free desktop wallet supports a personal Bitcoin backend or an optional Liana Connect service; paid business services add hosting and operational support. A personal node is one choice, not a requirement for every setup.
Liana lets a wallet define ordinary spending conditions and alternative conditions that become available after a delay. Those rules are part of the Bitcoin script. For example, Simple Inheritance uses a primary key and a delayed recovery key; Expanding Multisig can change a two-of-two arrangement into two-of-three after the specified delay.
Build and back up the policy
Choose a template or Build your own, add and label the primary signer, then add the recovery key and timelock. Choose a backend and register the wallet descriptor on compatible signing devices. Verify receiving addresses on the hardware before relying on the setup.
Each signer has its own recovery seed. The wallet also needs its descriptor, which records the keys and policy. Export it under Settings, Wallet, Export descriptor. The descriptor alone cannot spend, but it can reveal wallet information and needs appropriate privacy protection.
Timelocks apply to the age of individual coins in Bitcoin blocks. Spending or refreshing a coin resets that coin's clock; unrelated wallet activity does not restart the delay for every untouched coin.
Choose the operating arrangement
The community wallet can run locally without a service account. Liana Connect uses email access and can see wallet addresses and activity; using a personal Bitcoin Core or Electrum backend changes that visibility and the infrastructure the owner operates.
Business service costs 0.016% of the Bitcoin secured per month, with monthly or annual billing. Standard onboarding is a one-time 0.02 BTC. Bespoke onboarding starts at 0.1 BTC and includes up to ten consultation hours.
Liana currently links a Coldcard seed-generation advisory. If that signer is part of the setup, consult the vendor’s current notice: a firmware update alone does not repair an affected existing seed.
Strengths
- Policy templates cover both delayed recovery and expanding signer arrangements
- The backend can be changed while retaining the wallet policy
Watch out for
- Compatible signers and the wallet descriptor are both part of recovery preparation
- A hosted backend can see wallet addresses and activity
- The delay must be understood separately for each coin
Best for
- Bitcoin users planning a delayed alternative to their normal signing keys
- Organizations comparing self-managed policies with paid operational support
