What it does

The National Library of Wales provides historical photographs through catalogues and digital exhibitions. Its collections include early Swansea photography, John Thomas’s views and portraits, and Geoff Charles’s photojournalism.

For John Thomas photographs, open the catalogue, select Digitised Items, choose Author/Creator under Search filters and enter John Thomas. Set Material type to Images, then add a subject in another search row if needed. Other photographer and collection pages provide routes into different periods of Welsh visual history.

Public Domain Mark items may be copied and adapted, including for commercial purposes, without copyright permission. Other items carry copyright, unknown-rights or noncommercial Creative Commons labels. The Library’s CC0 metadata policy is separate from these image terms.

A requested high-resolution digital reproduction costs GBP 17.17 per image under the current price list, excluding VAT; publication rights can cost extra. For a licence enquiry, provide the image reference, file format and resolution, intended product, print run, duration and territory. Paid supply does not replace any permission needed from an outside copyright holder.

Strengths

  • Photographer-specific guides explain catalogue searches.
  • Rights labels distinguish public-domain and restricted imagery.
  • Published reproduction prices help plan image-supply costs.

Watch out for

  • Restricted uses can require both a Library licence and permission from an outside rights holder.

Best for

  • Publishers researching Welsh photographic and visual history
