What it does

LightWave 3D is modelling, animation and rendering software for 3D artists. Its 2026 tools include mesh fracturing, physics-based object placement and an asset browser. New commercial licences and upgrades are sold as separate one-time purchases.

Advanced Placement drops objects into a scene and lets them fall, bounce and settle. Collision shape, mass, friction and bounce can be adjusted while the tool stays open. The Grab tool moves an object while it collides with its neighbours, and captured motion can be baked for animation.

Fracture divides meshes using random, grid or axis-biased point distributions. It preserves surface materials and UV coordinates, the texture positions on a model, while creating internal cut surfaces. Adjustable spacing lets you separate the pieces before using them as debris or simulation assets.

The Asset Browser handles images, videos, models and lighting data. Its specialised views include LightWave presets, downloaded Megascans Bridge assets and MaxTrees vegetation. Ocean Spectrum adds wind-driven water with motion that can be saved to an MDD animation cache.

Upgrade from 2024 or earlier GBP 550

Upgrades stay linked to the existing product ID. Some included tools have platform limits: Flow fluid simulation is available on PC only.

Strengths

  • Fracture keeps existing materials and texture coordinates.
  • Advanced Placement motion can be captured for later animation.

Watch out for

  • Flow fluid simulation is PC-only.
  • Upgrade eligibility and cost depend on the version already owned.

Best for

  • Artists placing and animating scene objects
