What it does
LilyPond turns musical notation into typeset sheet music and is distributed as free software.
LilyPond compiles a text file describing notes into engraved music for viewing or printing. Reuse a musical variable in both the full score and individual parts so a revision updates both. This is local notation processing with a native package for Windows, macOS or Linux.
The workflow requires learning notation syntax. It does not provide direct note dragging onto a graphical score; external editing environments can add completion, templates or a graphical interface. Check the package’s operating-system requirements and use the Learning Manual for the first file.
