What it does
ICANN Lookup is a browser-based RDAP client for accessing current registration data, with an accompanying command-line client for scripted queries.
Enter a domain or an Internet number resource to retrieve current public registration information. ICANN documents that the free JavaScript client queries the responsible RDAP service directly from the browser and presents its response in a readable form. The FAQ says fields can vary between registries and registrars or be marked redacted, so a missing public contact does not prove that no holder exists. For a domain with unavailable RDAP service, the tool may offer a CAPTCHA-protected, optional WHOIS fallback where that service exists; it does not offer that fallback for number resources. A separate official command-line client supports scripting. Keep the source service and lookup time with the result rather than treating it as ownership history.
Strengths
- Public browser-based registration lookup
- Official command-line option
Watch out for
- Registration responses can omit or redact information
