What it does
Lospec’s palette list collects artist-created and historical hardware palettes for pixel art. Name, tag and colour-count filters narrow the list, with image and application-specific palette downloads.
Set a maximum, minimum or exact colour count to match the project’s constraint. Tags distinguish themes and hardware associations, while sorting can favour newer palettes or those downloaded more often.
Choose ASE for Photoshop, GPL for GIMP or another supported palette format. A PNG is a portable alternative: open or paste it into the drawing and sample its swatches with the editor’s eyedropper. That imports colours as pixels rather than native palette entries.
Compatible applications can receive a palette through Open in Software. Developers register the custom URI handler, receive the palette slug and request its JSON or CSV data. The API provides the name, author and hexadecimal colours.
Strengths
- Exact colour-count filters suit constrained pixel-art projects.
- Downloads cover several editor formats and ordinary PNG images.
Watch out for
- Open in Software requires an application that handles Lospec’s URI.
Best for
- Pixel artists choosing a limited working palette
