What it does

Luno offers crypto purchases and an order-book exchange in supported countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Malaysia and Indonesia. Kenya remains supported for existing users, with new sign-ups currently paused.

Luno's Exchange lets an order specify both a price and how it may fill. That differs from an instant purchase through the Portfolio screen, which has its own fees. Check the country-specific service first: new accounts are available in the listed supported markets, while Kenya is currently closed to new sign-ups.

For the South African service, users must be at least 18 and open an account in their own name. Accepted identity documents include a national ID card or book, driving licence or valid South African passport. The Profile, Settings and Verification section shows the account's verification level. Other countries have their own document requirements and limits.

On mobile, select the trading pair, choose Buy and Limit, then enter the maximum price and amount. Time in Force controls what happens next. Good 'Til Cancelled leaves the order open until filled or cancelled. Immediate Or Cancel removes any part that cannot fill immediately. Fill Or Kill cancels the entire order unless it can fill immediately in full. Funds reserved for an open buy order cannot be used elsewhere. Review orders under My Orders on mobile or Open Orders on the web, where cancellation is available.

Luno is migrating markets to a new exchange during October and November 2026. Each affected market closes temporarily and its open orders are cancelled, so a resting order may need to be entered again after the change. Migrated markets require a dedicated trading wallet. With Exchange switched on, select Transfer, choose the trading-wallet destination, currency and amount, and confirm. Deposits and blockchain withdrawals still use the separate transactional wallet; transfers between the two are free.

Fees depend on country, pair and volume. As a South African example, the first tier for ordinary crypto/ZAR pairs lists 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker fees for 30-day volume up to R20,000. Maker orders add to the book; taker orders fill existing liquidity. Stablecoin/rand and crypto/crypto pairs have different schedules. Portfolio instant buys and sells generally cost 2%, while instant card buying costs 3.9%. These are separate purchase routes.

On migrated markets, the trading fee is deducted from the asset received: buying BTC costs a fee in BTC, while selling BTC for rand costs a fee in rand. The migration changes the fee asset, not the published percentages. A limit price controls the order's execution condition; it does not prevent the purchased crypto from losing value afterward.

Strengths

  • Offers persistent, immediate partial-fill and all-or-nothing order choices
  • Separates exchange funds from deposit and withdrawal funds on migrated markets

Watch out for

  • New account registration is paused in Kenya
  • An open buy order reserves funds until it fills or is cancelled
  • Market migration cancels existing orders and changes the wallet used for trading

Best for

  • South African users comparing Exchange orders with instant purchases
  • Eligible Luno users managing order duration and the trading-wallet transition
