What it does

Luzi Type publishes retail typefaces, design essays and test fonts. Its license guide separates desktop, web and app use, and explains contractor access and device or traffic limits.

Luzi Type's catalog ranges from the related Messina families to First Aid Kit, a collection of 13 contrasting designs for titles and branding. Test fonts retain spacing, kerning, alternates and ligatures but have fewer characters. Request them by name and email for private client presentations or coursework; finished public work requires a production licence.

The shop's Assistant helps select licences through a short questionnaire. For a client purchase, you can also build a selection and choose GENERATE PDF OFFER beneath the cart. The PDF contains a link that lets the client complete the purchase themselves. All licences are perpetual with no recurring fee. Desktop rights count computers, web rights cover the licence holder's domains within a combined page-view allowance, and an app licence covers one app across platforms.

An organisation using an external agency can add Contractor Extension at checkout, include the contractors' computers in the allowance and obtain their written agreement before sharing files. The extension covers work for that organisation, rather than giving the contractor a general font library.

Strengths

  • Retains kerning and OpenType features in the limited-character trials.
  • Provides a licence assistant and shareable PDF offers for client purchases.

Watch out for

  • Test fonts have a limited character set.
  • Sharing desktop fonts with contractors requires appropriate coverage.

Best for

  • Brands comparing related text families.
  • Organisations coordinating font use with external designers.
