What it does

Magdeleine curates free stock photographs and displays licence labels beside images. Its discovery options include subject, dominant colour, black-and-white imagery and separate CC0 or attribution-required browsing. Individual pages identify the photographer and link to the applicable licence.

Open Explore to choose a subject, dominant colour or permission category. On a photo page, the Palette lists more precise colours alongside the file’s resolution, size and camera. Choose Download, or press D; the left and right arrow keys move between photographs.

The library mixes permissions. A CC0 image permits commercial editing without requesting permission. The CC BY-SA 4.0 photo by Pasquale Vitiello requires credit, a licence link and an indication of changes; shared adaptations must use the same or a compatible licence. Follow the badge on the selected image rather than applying one rule to the whole collection.

Downloads are direct image files. Sponsored iStock links lead to a separate service.

Strengths

  • Licence labels and photographer links appear with individual photographs
  • Palette, resolution and file-size details help assess a candidate

Watch out for

  • The collection mixes licences, including attribution and share-alike requirements

Best for

  • Designers who want to filter image appearance and permission separately
