What it does
Magnum Photos is a photographer-owned cooperative whose archive serves editorial, publishing and other professional image buyers. Magnum Pro combines documentary stories with thematic collections, an anniversary calendar and research assistance.
Use Archive Calendar for an anniversary brief, or Advanced Search for a particular frame. The search form accepts exact and excluded text, year ranges, image identifiers, orientation and a high-resolution-only option.
Professional archive access requires registration details that establish your work; limited academic exceptions can be requested. Licences are rights managed, with the permitted medium, duration, territory and other uses set out on the invoice. Internal comp use lasts up to 30 days and does not permit publication.
A documentary photograph usually has no model or property release. Commercial use can therefore need further clearance and the photographer’s agreement. Cropping also requires prior consent, so allow time for approval if the layout changes the original frame.
Strengths
- Archive Calendar supports stories tied to historical anniversaries.
- Advanced Search can exclude exact text and limit results to high-resolution material.
- Research assistance is available for a specific image brief.
Watch out for
- Professional registration is screened; general archive access is not automatic.
- Cropping and commercial uses may require additional permissions.
Best for
- Picture editors licensing documentary and historical photography
