What it does
Mailfence is a Belgian email service with browser-side OpenPGP encryption, signing and key management. Its wider account includes calendars, documents and group features.
Mailfence gives OpenPGP users visible control over their keys: create a new key or import one, exchange public keys with contacts, then choose signing, encryption or both for the conversation. Its browser interface manages the keys without a separate plug-in. That is useful when correspondents already use the OpenPGP standard.
The choice remains deliberate. Mailfence says users choose which messages to encrypt; an ordinary email does not become end-to-end encrypted simply because the mailbox supports encryption. The plan table also places aliases, custom domains and mail-client protocols in specific tiers.
Strengths
- OpenPGP key import and export support interoperable encrypted correspondence.
- Digital signing and encryption are both documented.
- Calendars and document tools accompany the mailbox.
Watch out for
- Plan allowances differ for aliases, custom domains and mail-client protocols.
Best for
- People exchanging OpenPGP mail with contacts at other providers
