What it does
MAME documents and emulates older electronic systems, including arcade machines, computers and consoles. The project treats working emulation as validation of hardware documentation.
Use the emulated-system guide for the machine rather than choosing a game by name alone. Required media and hardware details differ between systems. MAME is useful for preservation and research as well as play, while the emulator’s license does not provide rights to every historical software image.
Strengths
- Broad hardware documentation and emulation
Best for
- Researching or recreating a documented older machine
