What it does
marketstack is a JSON API for stock prices, company identifiers and related market datasets. Free accounts receive a small end-of-day allowance for non-commercial work. Paid subscriptions add longer history, commercial use and US intraday data, with further datasets on higher tiers.
The Free plan provides 100 requests a month, one year of history, splits and dividends. Choose Get Free API Key to register. This allowance suits a small prototype rather than a frequently refreshed stock dashboard.
Where the paid tiers differ
| Plan | Monthly request allowance | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 100 | One year of history, splits and dividends; non-commercial use |
| Basic | 10,000 | Ten years of history and US IEX intraday data; US$9.99 monthly or US$8.99 a month billed yearly |
| Professional | 100,000 | Adds real-time updates |
| Business | 500,000 | Adds more company datasets |
Paid plans also list charges for requests beyond the included allowance.
The free licence is non-commercial. If a project will display data to customers, compare the paid licence and the coverage of the particular endpoint. An exchange-information directory is not the same as price coverage for every exchange in that directory.
Strengths
- Free access includes adjusted-event information such as splits and dividends
- Paid plan tables expose quotas, historical depth and overage rates
Watch out for
- The free allowance is only 100 requests a month
- Intraday access begins on a paid plan and is specified for US IEX data
Best for
- Developers prototyping an end-of-day stock application
- Small projects that need JSON price history
