What it does
Mathics3 is a computer algebra system using Mathematica-compatible syntax, with command-line and web-interface components.
Mathics3 uses Mathematica-compatible expression syntax within a GPLv3 Python system. Its evaluation guide shows exact rational output for an expression such as 1 + 2/3, while Pi stays symbolic unless a numerical approximation is requested. An unchanged expression is not automatically an error: a misspelled function or unmatched argument form can remain unevaluated. Check the intended function's support when moving existing work. The required core has a minimal terminal interface; mathicsscript adds history across sessions, completion and Unicode input. Mathics3-Django adds notebook-like browser sessions and formatted mathematics/graphics. Its running guide describes session storage in a local database and warns that the web server is intended for local use; these components do not imply a ready public hosted service.
Strengths
- Mathematica-compatible expression syntax
- Modular core, terminal and web-interface components
Best for
