What it does
Maxio combines subscription and contract billing with usage measurement, invoices, payment connections and financial reporting. Standard plans and negotiated contracts can coexist in its catalog. Advanced Billing organizes products, customers and subscriptions into sites, with separate testing and live operation. Live billing requires a paid subscription.
Maxio is built around the recurring billing work of a software business: setting a customer's terms, invoicing them, collecting payment and reporting the resulting revenue. It supports standard catalog plans as well as negotiated contracts.
In Advanced Billing, the lightning-bolt Quick Actions menu opens customer, subscription and offer forms from inside a site. Permissions determine which actions appear. If there are no products yet, subscription and offer creation take you to the product catalog first.
When creating a subscription, select the customer, collection method, first billing date, product and any component quantities. The collection choice distinguishes an invoice the customer pays manually from charging a saved payment method. On the subscription summary, review the balance, history and draft of the upcoming invoice before changing terms.
Subscription actions includes credits, prepayments, cancellation and holds. A service credit reduces a future invoice; it is not a refund. Mid-cycle quantity changes let you choose full, prorated or deferred charging, then decide whether to collect immediately or add the amount to the next invoice. Those choices should match the customer's agreement.
Grow is advertised at $599 per month for up to $100,000 in monthly billings. Scale uses a custom quote above that billing level. Both include subscription and usage billing, collections and gateway connections; the comparison distinguishes standard and advanced financial reporting. Live Advanced Billing requires a paid subscription.
Sites keep their own products, customers and subscriptions. The account overview can report across sites and export selected sites to a CSV file. A separate test site is useful when changing the setup, with a maximum of ten test sites per account.
Before switching live, use Setup Guide. Maxio requires a real gateway or invoice-only billing, cleared test data, a failed-payment follow-up strategy and HTTPS webhook endpoints. Payment-provider terms and eligibility still need to match the business.
Developers manage credentials for the programming interface (API) under Config > Integrations > API Keys. Keys belong to a site, and separate keys can be assigned to integrations so one connection can be retired without replacing every credential.
Strengths
- Standard plans and negotiated contracts share the billing platform.
- Mid-cycle changes expose both proration and collection-timing choices.
- Account-wide reporting and CSV exports can combine selected sites.
Watch out for
- Going live requires the documented setup checks and a paid account.
- A test site can send only 100 emails in a rolling 24-hour period.
- Quick Actions and integration settings depend on the user's assigned permissions.
Best for
- B2B software businesses with negotiated billing terms
- Subscription teams managing usage or seat changes
- Finance teams reporting across several billing sites
