What it does

Maxwell Render offers a standalone scene application and integrations for several 3D modelling packages. Its Multilight feature keeps lights adjustable after rendering, allowing different illumination versions from the same saved render. Commercial licences are perpetual for the purchased major version.

Multilight is useful when a scene needs several lighting treatments. Enable it in Render Options before starting the render, then adjust the light sliders during or after rendering. Keep the MXI render file to reopen those controls later. Light emitters are grouped by material, so separate objects using the same emitting material share a control.

The output choice matters. Separated mode saves the individual light contributions, while Composite saves the combined result. More emitting materials create more light buffers, increasing memory use and MXI file size. That is a practical reason to plan light groups before rendering.

Maxwell Studio and individual host plugins are separate purchases. Each paid option includes the render engine, network-render tools and the standalone material editor, but a plugin licence does not include Studio. The Bundle includes Studio and all integrated plugins.

The official store lists Studio and host plugins from US$595, and the Bundle from US$845, before applicable taxes. Next Limit bills in US dollars or euros according to customer location. Commercial licences cover updates within the purchased major version. Node-locked and floating options are available; floating licences require an RLM licence server.

Strengths

  • The Bundle includes both Studio and the available host integrations.
  • Node-locked licences can work without an internet connection after activation.

Watch out for

  • Additional light buffers increase memory use and saved-render size.
  • Perpetual commercial licences do not include every future major version.

Best for

  • Visualisation artists delivering several lighting treatments
  • Studios choosing between standalone scene assembly and host plugins
