What it does
Dynamic Auto Painter repaints an existing photograph with algorithmic brushstrokes on a Windows computer. You choose a painting preset rather than generate a scene from a text prompt. Version 9 adds curved strokes that follow image shapes and controls for handling flat areas such as skies and walls.
Tune how the strokes follow the photograph
Choose a preset, then use the Follow tab to inspect its stroke paths over the image. Custom Sweep changes their detail, smoothness, minimum length and curvature before painting. Preset badges identify styles using the curved-stroke engine.
Flat Area Blending works after the broad underpainting pass. It softens unwanted paint seams in smooth regions while retaining image edges. The finished rendering can become a starting point for further editing in another painting application.
Local processing and usage rights
DAP processes images on the computer and does not use a subscription or cloud generation. Its FAQ permits commercial use of the results, provided you have the necessary rights to the original image. A capable CPU matters more than a specialized graphics card. The developer lists Windows support; an old Wine-based Mac approach is no longer maintained.
Strengths
- Stroke paths can be adjusted before the paint pass
- Preset filters identify curved-stroke and favourite styles
- Processing stays on the local computer
Watch out for
- There is no maintained native Mac edition
- Commercial use still depends on rights to the input image
Best for
- Photographers exploring painted interpretations of their own images
- Artists preparing a painted base for further refinement
