What it does
mempool.space is a public Bitcoin explorer built from free, open-source software. It visualizes transactions awaiting confirmation, estimates fee rates and offers an API and self-hosted installation options.
A wallet notification tells you a payment was sent; an explorer helps establish what happened next. Copy the transaction ID from the wallet and search for it on mempool.space. The result places that payment in the wider queue of transactions awaiting a block.
The dotted divider separates projected blocks from blocks already mined. Fee suggestions on the dashboard range from No Priority to High Priority. These are rates, not a total payment charge: the final fee also depends on transaction size. A projection is a forecast, and the suggested rate cannot promise confirmation by a particular time.
The transaction page can distinguish its own fee rate from an effective rate influenced by related transactions. That distinction explains why a low-fee payment sometimes appears in a block with a higher advertised fee range. For help changing a pending payment, return to the wallet or exchange that created it.
The project’s AGPL-licensed code can run on your own infrastructure. Supported node systems include Umbrel, RaspiBlitz and StartOS, with Docker available for other deployments. Manual server setup calls for system-administration skills, and support for those deployments is reserved for enterprise sponsors. Running an explorer does not give it control of a wallet’s keys.
Public transaction search is separate from optional services such as Mempool Accelerator. Check that service’s own quote and conditions before treating an acceleration offer as part of free explorer access.
Strengths
- Mempool Goggles highlights transaction types within block visualizations
- Block audits compare projected contents with the block actually mined
- Developers can retrieve explorer data through an API
Watch out for
- Projected blocks and suggested fees cannot guarantee a confirmation time
- Manual installations require server expertise and have restricted support
Best for
- Bitcoin users investigating a payment that is still awaiting confirmation
- Node operators who want their own view of transaction demand
