What it does
MeshLab is an open-source desktop tool for processing triangular 3D meshes, including scanned objects. It covers inspection, cleaning, texturing and conversion, with a related Python library for batch filters. Windows, Mac and Linux packages are available under GPLv3 terms.
A 3D scan can need cleaning and inspection before it becomes a usable asset. MeshLab works on existing triangular meshes, with tools for healing, texturing, conversion and preparation for 3D printing. Its supported formats include glTF/GLB and 3MF, and current downloads cover Windows, macOS and Linux.
For repeated processing, the related PyMeshLab library runs MeshLab filters from Python. Its convex-hull example loads an OBJ into a MeshSet, applies generate_convex_hull and saves the resulting mesh as another OBJ. The operation creates a new mesh and makes that output the current selection, which matters when a script continues with another filter.
MeshLab's code is GPLv3. The older meshlabserver batch route has been replaced by PyMeshLab; a maintained automation workflow should use the current library rather than assume those older commands are still the preferred entry point.
Strengths
- Mesh processing includes cleaning, healing, texturing and conversion.
- PyMeshLab exposes the filter workflow to Python.
- Downloads include Apple Silicon and Linux ARM64 builds.
Watch out for
- The former meshlabserver automation route has been replaced by PyMeshLab.
Best for
- Teams preparing scanned meshes for further production
- Developers automating repeated mesh-processing steps
