What it does
Metasequoia is a Windows and Mac polygon modeller with bones, morphs, sculpting, painting and Python scripting. Free use provides the Standard toolset; EX adds selected import/export formats and higher rendering capability.
PathClone can build a chain from one ring. Create a torus, compress it along X, then choose PathClone with Z as the base axis and Interval spacing. Draw a path and press Clone. Offset the path for the next set of rings, rotate the original ring 90 degrees around Z and clone again to interleave the links. This is useful when repeated geometry needs to follow a route rather than a straight row.
The free Standard-equivalent toolset permits commercial and non-commercial use. It includes bones, morphs, sculpting, 3D painting, Python and exports such as OBJ, STL, glTF and VRM. EX adds FBX, PLY and 3MF export, multiple UV channels and other features. Free ray/path-traced rendering has a resolution ceiling.
EX is a USD 100 permanent licence for Windows and Mac. The purchase process needs both payment and a separate registration form; the vendor then emails the key within one to five business days. A charged licence permits up to two computers used by one person, or one computer shared by several users. Server access needs a licence for each permitted client PC.
For character work, edition choice can therefore depend as much on the receiving format and UV setup as on the modelling tools.
