What it does
Microsoft Power BI connects business data with interactive reports and semantic models. It works within Microsoft Fabric, with free report creation and paid licensing or capacity arrangements for organizational use.
Power BI combines data models and interactive reports within Microsoft Fabric. The licensing decision becomes important when a report needs an audience beyond its creator.
| Access option | Practical scope |
|---|---|
| Free | Create reports for personal use in My workspace; consume content where the organization's capacity permits |
| Pro | Publish and share through the paid per-user licensing route |
| Premium Per User | Adds larger models, more refresh capacity and other advanced features |
Capacity-based arrangements offer another distribution route, so a free viewer's access depends on where the content is hosted. Pro is included in Microsoft 365 E5 and Office 365 E5; check the organization's existing entitlement before buying it separately.
To start with the online service, use a work or school account. Personal consumer email addresses are not the direct signup route, and an administrator can disable self-service registration. Where registration is permitted, the signup process assigns the available licence; the account manager shows which licence you have.
